5lt crackleglaze

  • crackleglaze is a water-based glaze which, when sandwiched between two coats of paint, causes the top layer of paint to crack revealing the bottom colour
  • when considering a project, bear in mind that it is the base colour that shows through the cracks of the top colour on the finished surface, so choose your colours accordingly.

             for example:

duck egg blue emulsion on the bottom

             crackleglaze in the middle

             cream emulsion on the top

  • crackleglaze is ideal for creating a weathered look on trays, frames, boxes and furniture
  • crackleglaze can be used in conjunction with decoupage

q.   what is the coverage for crackleglaze?

a.   the area of coverage is roughly 10-12 litres per sq.m.  this is approximate as each individual applies paint differently.

q.   what do mean by "weathered look"?

a.   the crack creates the effect that you might see if you left a piece of painted wood outside in all weathers so that the top layer almost appears to have peeled back.

q.   what kind of paint should I use?

a.   a water based emulsion, just like one that you might use on your walls is fine.  most manufacturers in DIY stores have reasonably priced tester pots.  oil based paints are not compatible with this system.

q.   help!  there are no cracks.

a.   the top coat of paint was too thick.  thin it with a little water to get the consistency of runny custard.

q.   can I shake the tub before I start?

a.   this is one of those cases where you can shake or stir!  the crackleglaze separates in the bottle which isn't a problem.  it is important to mix it well before you start on your project.  if you stir, make sure that whatever you use is clean or contamination can occur.

q.  how tacky is tacky?

a.  slightly sticky.  not too wet, but almost dry.

q.   what do you mean  by "load the brush with paint"?

a.   dip the bottom of the brush into the paint so that it appears the brush can't hold anymore paint.

q.   do I have to paint in one direction only?

a.   the top coat of paint should be painted in only one direction.  drag the loaded brush lightly in one direction.  when the brush looks as though it's going to run out of paint, reload, and carry on where you left off moving in the same direction.

q.   is it true that one should not brush over an area twice?

a.   the crackle effect will not occur if you do brush over an area twice.

q.   what happens if I missed a spot?

a.   touch up the area with the tip of the brush

q.   can I use a hair dryer to speed up the process?

a.  yes, it is possible to speed up the process by using a warm setting.  this will increase the size of the crack.
